Bridget comes from the Irish Brigid — the name of one of the most important goddesses of pre-Christian Ireland, associated with poetry, healing, and the forge. When Ireland converted to Christianity, the goddess Brigid was absorbed into the figure of Saint Brigid of Kildare (c. 451-525), one of the patron saints of Ireland.
Bridget has been in continuous use in Ireland and the broader English-speaking world for over a thousand years. The character Bridget Jones in Helen Fielding's novels gave the name a fresh 1990s resonance. Today it sits in the U.S. top 500.
Bridget reduces to three — the number of poetic expression.
