Lilith (לִילִית) is a Hebrew name meaning "of the night" — from the same root as the Hebrew lailah (night). In Jewish folklore, Lilith was Adam's first wife, created equal to him from the earth, who refused to be subordinate and was banished; she has been variously depicted as a demon, a goddess, and (by modern feminists) a symbol of female autonomy.
Lilith has been rising rapidly in the 2020s as part of the broader reclamation of mythological figures. The Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina features Lilith prominently. Today the name sits in the U.S. top 200.
Lilith reduces to nine — the number of refused subordination.
