Nazia is from the Arabic nāẓi (ناظي — proud, pure) + feminine suffix. A modern American baby name in the broader Arabic-Urdu-Pakistani heritage aesthetic. Nazia Hassan (1965-2000) was a Pakistani-British pop singer, songwriter, lawyer, and UNICEF Cultural Ambassador — widely known as the Queen of South Asian Pop and a foundational pioneer of South Asian pop music. Her album Disco Deewane (1981, recorded at age 16, composed by Biddu, released by EMI Pakistan) became the best-selling Asian pop album in history at the time — charting in 14 countries. Her song Aap Jaisa Koi in the Indian film Qurbani (1980) earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer (1981) at age 16 — the youngest recipient and first Pakistani Filmfare winner. Subsequent albums: Star/Boom Boom (1982), Young Tarang (1983), Hotline (1987), Camera Camera (1992). Over 60 million records sold worldwide. Pride of Performance (2002, posthumous). Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Richmond University, London.
