Salmacis (Σαλμακίς) was the naiad of a spring in Caria. When she saw the youth Hermaphroditus bathing, she leapt upon him; the gods, hearing her prayer to never be parted from him, fused them into a single being — the origin of the word "hermaphrodite."
Featured in Ovid's Metamorphoses Book 4.
Salmacis reduces to eight — the number of Greek fusion.
