Tarpeia was the Roman vestal virgin who, in the legend of the Sabine War, betrayed Rome to the Sabines in exchange for what they wore on their arms — expecting gold bracelets, she received their shields, which crushed her to death. **The Tarpeian Rock**, from which traitors were thrown, was named after her.
Featured in Livy and Plutarch.
Tarpeia reduces to one — the number of Roman cautionary tale.
