The ancient language of the Vedas, the Mahabharata, and the goddesses.
Sanskrit is the classical language of South Asia — the language of the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the great epics. Most Indian girl names trace ultimately to Sanskrit roots, even when filtered through Hindi, Tamil, or Bengali on their way to the cradle.
We list names in their original Devanagari script alongside the IAST transliteration. The Sanskrit grammatical tradition is two and a half thousand years old; we treat the names with that depth of respect.
